‘Captain Marvel’: Touching Stan Lee Tribute Revealed

Warning: this article contains spoilers for Stan Lee’s tribute and cameo in Marvel’s new film Captain Marvel starring Brie Larson.

Captain Marvel features a touching and heartfelt tribute to the late great Stan Lee just as the film gets started. As the opening titles begin, the Marvel Studios title card that we’re used to seeing feature the heroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe appear inside the letters of instead features Stan Lee as he appeared in the many cameos he had in the prior 21 films that came before Captain Marvel.

Following the Marvel Studios title card, “For Stan” appears on the screen and holds for a moment.

The film, of course, features a brand new cameo from Stan Lee as well. The Marvel legend appears early on in the film, during the first chase sequence on the Train. Stan Lee pops up as a passenger riding on the train, reading the script for Mallrats, and practicing his line “Trust me, I’m a believer,” for his cameo in the 1995 Kevin Smith film.

The passing of the Marvel co-creator is still very fresh in the minds of fans. Stan Lee passed away last November at the age of 95 from heart and respiratory failure, as well as aspiration pneumonia — the inhaling of stomach acid, saliva, or food into the lungs. He is survived by his daughter J.C. Lee. His wife Joan Lee passed away at the age of 93 in July of 2017 after she was hospitalized due to a stroke.

The Marvel Comic legend almost quit the comics industry for good in 1961 but before he did, his wife encouraged him to write one more comic. Stan Lee went on to write Fantastic Four with the help of Jack Kirby. After the book resonated with readers, Stan Lee was asked to write more titles similar to that of Fantastic Four. He went on to create iconic titles such as Spider-Man, X-Men, Iron Man, Black Panther, The Incredible Hulk, and The Avengers.

His legacy will carry on in both Marvel Comics as well as the Marvel Cinematic Universe this year with Captain MarvelAvengers: Endgame, and Spider-Man: Far From Home, the sequel to 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Mississipi Grind helmers Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck have directed Captain Marvel from a script written by Geneva Robertson-Dworet, Nicole Perlman and Meg LeFauve. Here’s the official synopsis:

Set in the 1990s, Marvel Studios’ “Captain Marvel” is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that follows the journey of Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes. While a galactic war between two alien races reaches Earth, Danvers finds herself and a small cadre of allies at the center of the maelstrom.

Captain Marvel stars Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Algenis Perez Soto, Rune Temte, McKenna Grace, Clark Gregg and Jude Law. The film is slated to hit theaters on March 8, 2019.

Following her debut in her titular standalone film, Brie Larson will return to face Thanos in April when Avengers: Endgame hits theaters on April 26, 2019, however, it remains unclear as to whether or not Samuel L Jackson will appear.

Plot details are still under wraps but the Avengers are expected to attempt to undo Thanos’ snap which gave way to the decimation of half of the Universe after the heroes failed to stop the Mad Titan from collecting all six Infinity Stones in Avengers: Infinity War. The highly-anticipated Avengers: Infinity War follow-up will conclude the previous 22 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe before Marvel kicks off Phase 4 with Spider-Man: Far From Home in July.
