‘Captain Marvel’ Trailer May Have Subtle Nod To ‘Avengers Initiative’

So the new Captain Marvel trailer may dig more into future Marvel Cinematic Universe lore than you thought. Or, it could, if you speculate about it hard enough. But one line from Coulson in the recent trailer does feel reminiscent of the Avengers Initiative from Iron Man. How?

Well, if you think back to the trailer, we hear Nick Fury say that he’s never seen anything like Carol before. He’s about to have his mind blown in about a decade or so. But anyway, following that, we get a previous shot of Coulson accompanied by the line “Think you can find others?” Sounds like Fury telling Tony Stark that his world’s about to get a lot bigger, doesn’t it? Now, to be clear, there’s no telling if the two lines of dialogue will play out this way in the film. For all we know, Coulson’s line about finding others could be about something completely unrelated.

It’s not unlikely that lines in trailers aren’t presented the same way that viewers will see them in the final product, after all. At the same time, though, it would be an interesting foreshadowing of things to come in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, not the least of which would include the Avengers Initiative down the line from now. It’d be a leap, yes, to say that this line in Captain Marvel is a direct nod to Fury assembling the Avengers leading up to… well, The Avengers. But what do you think?

Could this be a nod to what’s to come in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Or just, as per usual, lines in isolation that aren’t going to be connected in the final product? Let us know your take in the comments below. Here’s the synopsis for Captain Marvel:

“Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, Captain Marvel sidesteps the traditional origin-story template, and when it begins, Carol already has her powers. She’s left her earthly life behind to join an elite Kree military team called Starforce, led by Jude Law’s enigmatic commander. But before long, Carol finds herself back on Earth with new questions about her past. And she’s got a formidable enemy in the form of the Skrulls — the notorious Marvel baddies made all the more dangerous by their shape-shifting abilities. Ben Mendelsohn plays their leader Talos, who spearheads a Skrull invasion of Earth.”

Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, Captain Marvel stars Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Algenis Perez Soto, Rune Temte, Mckenna Grace, Clark Gregg, and Jude Law.

The film will fly into theaters on March 8, 2019.
