Carrie Fisher Autopsy Reveals Cocaine & Opiates Were In Her System

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed Carrie Fisher had cocaine and opiates in her system when she passed away last December.

It came as a shock when Star Wars’ most iconic heroine — the glue that held the rebellion together — passed away at age 60 after suffering a major heart attack while on a transatlantic flight from London to Los Angeles. Fisher managed to hang on but tragically slipped away just four days later.

According to the coroner’s report, the discovery of cocaine and opiates in her system came through toxicology tests but the medical examiner said that it was unclear how much of a role the drugs played in her death. A report from the Los Angeles County medical examiner’s office has also revealed that the actress had methadone in her system as well. Officially, the report states Fisher’s death was due to “sleep apnea and other undetermined factors.”

UPDATE: Billie Lourd, Fisher’s daughter, has released a statement to People Magazine regarding the coroner’s findings in hopes to encourage others struggling drug addiction and mental illness to seek out help:

“My mom battled drug addiction and mental illness her entire life. She ultimately died of it. She was purposefully open in all of her work about the social stigmas surrounding these diseases.

She talked about the shame that torments people and their families confronted by these diseases. I know my Mom, she’d want her death to encourage people to be open about their struggles. Seek help, fight for government funding for mental health programs. Shame and those social stigmas are the enemies of progress to solutions and ultimately a cure. Love you Momby.”

Fisher will be seen posthumously in her final performances later this year in both Wonderwell and Star Wars: The Last Jedi when it hits theaters on December 15, 2017. The actress has been confirmed to not appear in Star Wars: Episode IX.
