The announcement trailer for Disney and Pixar’s upcoming sequel, Cars 3 caught a lot of viewers off guard. Because the first two films held such a lighthearted tone with these characters, the fact that the first official glimpse at the film featured Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) in a major collision left even the biggest Cars detractors intrigued.

We finally have an extended look at Pixar’s latest, picking right where the announcement teaser left off. Now that Lightning McQueen is a veteran racer, the world of Cars finds him in a dilemma in which he tries to reclaim his past glory and prove that he is still the best racer in the game. We then see some quick shots featuring the film’s primary antagonist, Jackson Storm (Armie Hammer) as well as Lightning McQueen’s new ally, Cruz Ramirez (Cristela Alonzo).

Pixar has come a long way after all these years. What’s most fascinating about their sequels to some of their most popular films is that when audiences reunite with these beloved characters over a decade later, the animation has improved significantly. Finding Dory featured some of the best animation the studio has ever produced, and it looks like Cars 3 is continuing that tradition.

Admittedly, after the negative critical reception to Cars 2, many were not clamoring for yet another adventure with these characters. But interestingly enough, these teasers have only showcased Lightning McQueen, and we have yet to see the rest of the Radiator Springs gang. Mater and friends will have a presence in this film, but it sure looks like Lightning McQueen’s dilemma is once again back in focus after Mater’s espionage adventure.

Blindsided by a new generation of blazing-fast racers, the legendary Lightning McQueen is suddenly pushed out of the sport he loves. To get back in the game, he will need the help of an eager young race technician with her own plan to win, inspiration from the late Fabulous Hudson Hornet, and a few unexpected turns. Proving that #95 isn’t through yet will test the heart of a champion on Piston Cup Racing’s biggest stage!

Cars 3 races into theaters on June 16th.
