‘Castlevania’ Executive Producer In Talks For ‘Legend Of Zelda’ TV Series

Let’s talk about video games and their many attempts at adaptations. I’ll admit that I have a soft spot for the 1994 Street Fighter film and even own the first Mortal Kombat film on Blu-Ray because they’re fun to watch, but more often than not, these adaptations miss the mark. Even recent attempts like Assassin’s Creed or, more recently, Tomb Raider, don’t land. There are occasional bright spots, like Netflix’s animated Castlevania series, and we’ll have to see what the Halo series has in store, but let’s talk about the Legend of Zelda for a moment.

With series like Game of Thrones showing how it’s possible to translate a fantasy series into a successful, ongoing fantasy drama on television, the idea of adapting the Legend of Zelda series to screen seems like a no-brainer, right? Even though the timeline for some of the games can be as all over the place as the Marvel Cinematic Universe is at times, there’s some consistency from game to game. And to go back to Castlevania, it turns out one of the minds behind that series is, reportedly, setting his sights on Hyrule with a Zelda series.

Adi Shankar, who works as an executive producer on the Netflix Castlevania series, posted on his Instagram yesterday that he’s working with “an iconic Japanese gaming company to adapt one of their iconic video game series into a series.” And that he’ll announce what it is on November 16 at 1 P.M. Now nowhere in that statement does Shankar allude to Nintendo or the Legend of Zelda, yes. For all we know, maybe it’s Sega and he’s adapting a Sonic series, though we have that Sonic Boom cartoon, so there’s that.

According to an exclusive from The Wrap, though, it is confirmed that the series Shankar is speaking of is indeed an adaptation of the Legend of Zelda series. Here, have a look at Shankar’s announcement in the Instagram post below:

Given the success of the Castlevania series on Netflix, jumping from that to the Legend of Zelda series sound like the potential for equally great success. But how is it done? Do we follow Link and Zelda’s adventures spanned across just one game in the franchise? Or do we go from game to game in each season? Hopefully anything bodes better than the animated cut scenes from Legend of Zelda: Wand of Gamelon or Link: The Faces of Evil.
