‘Thor’ Star Cate Blanchett Wants More Female Villains In The MCU

This November’s Thor: Ragnarok marks the seventeenth entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since its inception in 2008 with Iron Man, but only the first to feature a woman as its main antagonist. The upcoming film is set to introduce audiences to the villainous Hela, played by Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett, who hopes that her role will lead to more female antagonists in the MCU.

Speaking with E! News after the Marvel Studios Hall H panel at Comic Con International in San Diego this past weekend, Blanchett had the following to say on the matter:

“I didn’t realize… I was inhabiting the first female Marvel villain onscreen. I thought, ‘Surely not… well, no actually that’s true.’ There’s been many, many, many [female villains] in the comic books, but they’ve been a little tardy in bringing them to the screen, so hopefully there will be a lot more villainesses.”

Blanchett also commented on perhaps the most discussed scene from the film’s two trailers — the one where Hela destroys Thor’s beloved hammer, Mjolnir.

“That had me at ‘hello’ actually. I thought that was really exciting that they were prepared to destroy Thor’s power in the first few minutes. It’s a nice entrance.”
