Chadwick Boseman Describes How Ramonda Factors Into ‘Black Panther’

Black Panther is, at its core, a political thriller, and wherever politics are involved, family’s usually not too far from it. Since T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) is having to deal with the pressures that come with rising to the throne, it makes sense that his mother and the former queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett) is one of his closest advisors.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Chadwick Bosemanrevealed that, since he’s still coming to terms with his father’s death and was not fully prepared to become king of Wakanda, he looks toward his mother for guidance:

“She is one of the advisors that he would look to. He has to look to her for some of the answers of what his father might want or might do. She may not be exactly right all the time, but she definitely has insights. The one thing I will say about all the female characters in this movie is that they are very strong. It’s a very matriarchal society. She is the queen mother. And she’s that for not just him, but for everybody. She’s has her hands in everything – even his love life.”

Hopefully, Ramonda comes across as a strong, experienced politician instead of unintentionally making Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa come across as a mama’s boy. Given his established story arc in Captain America: Civil War, it seems as though the former is thankfully what we’ll be seeing more of.

Black Panther strikes on February 16, 2018. The Marvel movie will feature a cast that includes Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa (Black Panther), Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia, Danai Gurira as Okoye, Martin Freeman as Everett K. Ross, Daniel Kaluuya as W’Kabi, Angela Bassett as Ramonda, Forest Whitaker as Zuri, Letitia Wright as Shuri, Florence Kasumba as Ayo, John Kani as T’Chaka, Sterling K. Brown as N’Jobu, Michael B. Jordan as Erik Kilmonger, Andy Serkis as Ulysses Klaue, and Winston Duke as M’Baku (Man-Ape). In addition, Atandwa Kani has been cast in an unspecified role.
