Channing Tatum: ‘Gambit’ Being Rewritten After ‘Deadpool’ & ‘Logan’

Channing Tatum says his X-Men solo movie spinoff, Gambit, is getting a rewrite thanks to the success of Deadpool and Logan.

Channing Tatum has given a new update on the development of his X-Men solo movie spinoff, Gambit, a project which has hit numerous speedbumps on its road to the big screen.

Speaking to Hey U Guys while on the red carpet for the UK premiere of his new Steven Soderbergh film Logan Lucky, Tatum, who will produce and star in the film as Remy LeBeau, revealed that the script for Gambit is now being rewritten thanks to the success of a couple of his fellow mutants. Here is what the actor said:

“We lit a fuse on the first one and just blew it completely out of the water. I think we got lucky – we got hit with some setbacks and it was all for a good reason. We were trying to do something completely different. We were trying to do something that this genre of movie hasn’t seen before. We kept running into the same problems, and then Deadpool and Logan came through and kicked the doors down. Now we’re really getting to do some of the things we’ve always wanted to do with the script – we’ve just sort of started over.”

Now, does Tatum’s statement mean that Gambit is aiming for the same R-rated tone of Deadpool and Logan? Not necessarily (at least, I hope not). Perhaps it simply means that everyone involved in the development of the film took a step back after seeing how both of those films faithfully brought those characters to life on the big screen in a way that satisfied fans and critics alike, and they are now planning to attempt the same thing with a character like Gambit. Personally, I’ve never been a big fan of the idea of a Gambit solo movie. I like the character, but I would much rather see him as part of a team of X-Men rather than on his own.

There is no release date set for 20th Century Fox’s Gambit. Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for all the latest Gambit news.
