Wonder Woman was a huge turning point for Warner Bros. and DC, as the film earned more than $800 million worldwide along with positive reviews. Connie Nielsen ended up playing Gal Gadot’s mother, Hippolyta, in the first Wonder Woman film and returned in Justice League. Before Connie Nielsen landed the role, Patty Jenkins and the studio were looking at Charlize Theron and Aquaman‘s Nicole Kidman. Patty Jenkins directed Charlize Theron to an Oscar in Monster, but it seems the actress wasn’t interested in a reunion. Charlize Theron shared on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen why she didn’t want to play Gal Gadot’s mother in Wonder Woman:
“This is a great example of how Hollywood like slaps you in the face when you start aging. And I was like, ‘I’m not familiar with it. What does Wonder Woman really do?’ And this person said, ‘No, it’s for Wonder Woman’s mom.’ It was the defining moment when I crossed over. And I wasn’t fully aware of it.”
