Charlize Theron Says Being Asked To Play Gal Gadot’s Mom In ‘Wonder Woman’ Was ‘A Slap In The Face’

Charlize Theron recently shared why she turned down a chance to play Gal Gadot’s mother in the first Wonder Woman film.

Wonder Woman was a huge turning point for Warner Bros. and DC, as the film earned more than $800 million worldwide along with positive reviews. Connie Nielsen ended up playing Gal Gadot’s mother, Hippolyta, in the first Wonder Woman film and returned in Justice League. Before Connie Nielsen landed the role, Patty Jenkins and the studio were looking at Charlize Theron and Aquaman‘s Nicole Kidman. Patty Jenkins directed Charlize Theron to an Oscar in Monster, but it seems the actress wasn’t interested in a reunion. Charlize Theron shared on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen why she didn’t want to play Gal Gadot’s mother in Wonder Woman:

“This is a great example of how Hollywood like slaps you in the face when you start aging. And I was like, ‘I’m not familiar with it. What does Wonder Woman really do?’ And this person said, ‘No, it’s for Wonder Woman’s mom.’ It was the defining moment when I crossed over. And I wasn’t fully aware of it.”

Full details on the Wonder Woman 1984 plot are currently unknown, though the film will follow Gal Gadot’s titular hero as she comes into conflict with the Soviet Union in the 1980s and encounters a formidable new adversary named Cheetah.

Directed by Patty Jenkins from a script she co-wrote with David Callaham and a treatment she developed with Geoff Johns, Wonder Woman 1984 stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Kristen Wigg, Pedro Pascal, Natasha Rothwell, Ravi Patel, Gabriella Wilde, Connie Nielson, and Robin Wright.

Wonder Woman 1984 will be released in theaters on June 4, 2020.
