Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok has been revered for reinventing the titular character by making him more likeable and eccentric. To achieve that, Waititi stripped the character away from his hammer, as well as the safety and familiarity of Asgard. Another key thing that was taken away from Chris Hemsworth’s Thor was his long, lush golden hair, which has become a staple of the character’s aesthetic. In the final film, Hemsworth’s God of Thunder is seen rocking hair that’s considerably shorter. However, an early piece of concept art imagines the Asgardian getting the full razor to his scalp, resulting in a buzz cut.
The concept art comes from Andy Park, Marvel Studios’ Director of Visual Development. In the concept art, Thor is seen wearing armor and rocking little to no hair, though he does seem to be have some stubble. You can check out the artwork below.
The buzz cut showcased above or the short hair seen in Thor: Ragnarok achieve the same thing: putting Chris Hemsworth’s character in an unfamiliar position. Both easily work for the film and it’s just a matter of opinion as to which looks better. The buzz cut is on the extreme side, especially because it would need constant cutting, whereas the short hair is perfect enough to accommodate a shoot as lengthy as Thor: Ragnarok.
