‘Wonder Woman 1984’ Star Chris Pine Discusses Steve Trevor’s Surprising Return

Chris Pine recently discussed Steve Trevor’s surprising return for Wonder Woman 1984.

Gal Gadot’s first cinematic solo outing introduced audiences to Chris Pine’s Steve Trevor, a United States Air Service officer who serves as an ally and love interest to Diana Prince. While Steve Trevor died towards the end of the movie, Wonder Woman 1984 director Patty Jenkins made the decision to bring the character back for the sequel, though it’s unclear how he’ll return from the dead.

During a recent interview with Total Film, Steve Trevor actor Chris Pine opened up about his role in Wonder Woman 1984 and the character’s state when we meet him in the upcoming sequel. Here’s what he told the magazine:

“What I will say about him is that he’s deeply, supremely excited. He’s excited to be back with Diana. He’s excited about this world. Tonally, what’s different is, he’s not world-weary. He’s not jaded. It’s a complete 180 from the tone of the character of the first one”

The first Wonder Woman movie saw Diana Prince in a “fish out of water” role, but in the sequel, Steve Trevor is the one who finds himself in that situation. In the same interview, Chris Pine shared his thoughts on his character’s role in Wonder Woman 1984 before revealing that Jenkins wanted to bring his character back before the first movie was even finished.

“I thought it was a nice idea. It’s a brilliant move on [director] Patty [Jenkins’] part. That’s just one clear indication of a big tonal shift this time out. Patty, towards the end of the first one, had been marinating on an idea. So yeah, I had an idea that I would come back. I think she may have even started to break the story while we were promoting [the first film].”

Full details on the Wonder Woman 1984 plot are being kept under wraps, but the film is said to follow Gal Gadot’s Diana Prince as she comes into conflict with a formidable new adversary named Cheetah and businessman Maxwell Lord. Wonder Woman was last seen in Zack Snyder’s DC superhero team-up movie Justice League.

Directed by Patty Jenkins from a script she co-wrote with David Callaham and a treatment she developed with Geoff Johns, the film stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig, Pedro Pascal, Natasha Rothwell, Ravi Patel, Gabriella Wilde, Connie Nielson, and Robin Wright.
