Chris Pratt Promises ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3’ Is Still Happening

While speaking at the premiere for his new movie, The Lego Movie 2, Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt assured fans a third installment of the Guardians film series is still coming.

Director James Gunn was suddenly pulled off of writing and directing Marvel’s third installment of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise after a series controversial tweets that the director sent out as far back as 2009 surfaced over the summer. Production on the project was originally set to begin last month, but Gunn’s firing resulted in the project being put on hold, while the studio searches for a new director to helm the film.

A new director has yet to be selected to take on the third installment, but Chris Pratt assured fans today that the film is still happening while speaking with Variety:

“I promise there’ll be a third movie, I don’t know exactly what that’s going to look like, but I know everyone on board is just eager to give the fans what they want and wrap up a trilogy in a meaningful way.

Although the third Guardians of the Galaxy had not officially been scheduled for release, it was expected to hit theaters in 2020. Marvel and Disney reportedly still plan on using the script Gunn wrote for the film. Gunn himself has since moved on as he is now at Warner Bros. writing and directing the long-in-development Suicide Squad sequel.

The full Guardians of the Galaxy cast is also expected to return for the third film along with Pratt, however, Drax actor Dave Bautista has said that he would drop out of the project should Disney opt not to use Gunn’s script.

The next Avengers film is set to debut this April. Here is the plot synopsis for Avengers: Endgame:

A culmination of 22 interconnected films the fourth installment of the Avengers saga will draw audiences to witness the turning point of this epic journey. Our beloved heroes will truly understand how fragile this reality is and the sacrifices that must be made to uphold it.
