Chris Pratt originally suggested to director James Gunn that Star-Lord should recognize Kurt Russell as Kurt Russell in 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.'
Acknowledging that Star-Lord would know who Russell is since he’s originally from Earth (or Terra if you prefer), Pratt continually tried to convince director James Gunn to let Star-Lord recognize Ego as Russell.
“Peter Quill would know who Kurt Russell is,” Pratt said. “…I kept pitching [director] James [Gunn] the idea, ‘Should I know that that’s Kurt Russell?’ He’s like, ‘Just trust me. Don’t.’”
The idea of having Star-Lord call out Russell for being Russell sounds a bit amusing but the practicality of it on-screen and the strange meta-sphere it could lead into makes it seem like Gunn probably made the right call by denying Pratt the gag. Plus, there’s bound to be numerous other jokes and meta-humor throughout the film if the first one is any indication.
Set to the backdrop of ‘Awesome Mixtape #2,’ Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.
Directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Kurt Russell, Sean Gunn, Elizabeth Debicki, Chris Sullivan, Michael Rosenbaum, and Sylvester Stallone.
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters May 5, 2017.
