Christopher Nolan On Large-Scale Filmmaking Prepping Him For ‘Dunkirk’

Christopher Nolan's entire career has led up to the release of his upcoming war film Dunkirk this summer on July 21, 2017.

Christopher Nolan’s entire career has led up to the release of his upcoming war film Dunkirk this summer.

The film itself, shot on large format 65MM film, tells a story of survival based on the true events of the evacuation of Dunkirk after allied forces were surrounded by the German army during World War II.

As part of their 10 movies you must see this summer preview, Nolan revealed to USA Today that he wouldn’t have been ready to take on the story of Dunkirk had he not already gained the experience of blockbuster filmmaking with his films such as The Dark Knight Trilogy, Inception or Interstellar when he explained how important the subject matter of Dunkirk was to him:

“It’s very important to me, so I didn’t want to take on this subject until I had a lot of experience with large-scale filmmaking and wouldn’t be too intimidated or daunted.”

The masterclass filmmaker also added that while Dunkirk isn’t a particularly emotional film, it will resonate with people who are familiar with the story of the evacuation:

“It’s not a sentimental film, but the subject matter itself is very weighted with emotion for people who know the story.”

The magazine has also premiered a brand new image from the film featuring Cillian Muphy overseeing a group of allied soldiers. You can check it out below.

The film stars Tom Hardy, Kenneth Branagh, Mark Rylance, Cillian Murphy, Aneurin Barnard, James D’Arcy, Jack Lowden, Barry Keoghan, Tom Glynn-Carney, and Harry Styles. Here’s the official synopsis:

“Dunkirk” opens as hundreds of thousands of British and Allied troops are surrounded by enemy forces. Trapped on the beach with their backs to the sea they face an impossible situation as the enemy closes in.

Dunkirk his theaters July 21, 2017.
