Christopher Nolan Presents ‘Dunkirk’ Footage At CinemaCon2017

Christopher Nolan is one of the most recognized modern filmmakers of the century. With his work on films such as Memento, The Prestige, Inception, Interstellar and of course The Dark Knight trilogy, he has managed to craft some of the most exciting films that were made for the big screen experience. And based on what we’ve seen from his new film Dunkirk, he is certainly continuing within that direction.

Nolan was at this year’s CinemaCon at Las Vegas, Nevada during the Warner Bros. presentation to promote his upcoming World War II drama. He discussed why he was drawn to the story:

Dunkirk and the legend of it is something that British people grow up with – it’s in our DNA. The idea of taking this paradoxical situation and putting it on the big screen – it’s something that’s been close to my heart for some time, it’s something I didn’t think I was ready to do.

The footage that was presented at CinemaCon was a shorter version of the prologue that was presented in front of IMAX screenings of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The characters portrayed by frequent Nolan-collaborator Tom Hardy and  Academy Award-winner Mark Rylance were featured in the footage.

I wanted to tell the story in the most visceral way possible. I wanted to take that audience and put them on that beach.

As a major proponent for celluloid and the moviegoing experience, Nolan expressed disinterest in the possibility of a shorter release window between the theatrical and home media release of major films:

The only platform I’m interested in talking about is theatrical exhibition.

Dunkirk storms into theaters on July 21. It will be presented in multiple formats: digital projection, 35 mm, 70 mm, IMAX digital and IMAX 70mm.
