‘Arrow’ Co-Creator Shares Why Colin Salmon’s Walter Steele Didn’t Return To The Series

Arrow co-creator Marc Guggenheim recently revealed the reason why Colin Salmon never returned as Walter Steele in later seasons of the series.

The Arrow series finale featured the return of many characters such as Talia and Nyssa al Ghul, Felicity Smoak and Barry Allen. However, one character who never made a return to the series was Walter Steele, who was played by Colin Salmon. During last month’s C2E2, Stephen Amell mentioned that he wishes Walter Steele made an appearance in the final season, but that never happened.

Colin Salmon’s Walter Steele was Oliver Queen’s step-father when he returned from the island of Lian Yu. Walter Steele was a recurring character in Arrow season one, but Colin Salmon exited the series after season two. On a recent episode of the Fake Nerd Podcast, Arrow co-creator Marc Guggenheim revealed why Colin Salmon never made a return to the series:

“Colin and I — we had a really nice exchange of DMs over Twitter afterwards. He was busy working on another project. He was just such a kind man. He reached out to say how much he wanted to be a part of it and we were able to just sort of catch up. It was really nice. That one was tough. I really wanted Colin in particular, because he’s so synonymous with the first season of the show. I feel like, when you do a series finale, the more moments that you can harken back to the pilot and back to the first season, the more it just feels resonant. It’s a tricky thing. We had tried to get Colin back over the course of several different seasons, and some things are meant to be and some things are not. But he’s a real gentleman.”

Are there other characters who you would’ve liked to have seen in the finale? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below!
