During a press junket for John Wick: Chapter 2, IGN asked the rapper/actor if he’s still open to playing the role. Here’s what he had to say:
“No, I haven’t spoken to DC. John Stewart, the character, is amazing. When I had the opportunity of potentially being John Stewart, when we were working, I learned how he was part of the Green Lantern Corps and all that he was doing. He was kind of community-driven so I felt like, ‘Oh, man, I love this character,’ he used his mind to do a lot of things so I connected with him. I just love the character, but I don’t know, I haven’t talked to DC about it but, you know, hey! Yeah, I would love [to]. That would be an honor to play John Stewart.”
We aren’t aware of who might end up playing John Stewart but the shortlist for Hal Jordan was recently released, and it featured Tom Cruise, Jake Gyllenhaal, Bradley Cooper, Armie Hammer, and Ryan Reynolds (who previously played the character in 2009’s Green Lantern).
Common was also recently seen in Suicide Squad in a cameo role. Green Lantern Corps will be written by David Goyer and Justin Rhodes, with Geoff Johns set to executive produce. The film is expected to hit theaters in 2020.
