‘Contagion’ Climbing Warner Bros. Charts Amid Coronavirus Outbreak

The coronavirus outbreak has resulted in Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion climbing Warner Bros. charts.

People all around the word are streaming and renting the 2011 film Contagion, resulting in the film climbing Warner Bros. charts. Back in 2011, Warner Bros. released Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion, a film that distills the hypothetical happenings of the world should it become plagued with a virus. In the film, which stars Matt Damon and Laurence Fishburne, a virus titled MEV-1 begins to plague the world, beginning with China.

Warner Bros. revealed to The New York Times that Contagion has climbed its charts in the past few weeks. The pandemic thriller was listed at number 270 back in December. With the coronavirus growing, Contagion has jumped to the second spot of Warner Bros. charts. The films ahead of Contagion are the ever-popular Harry Potter movies. In this trying and confusing time, it appears that some folks would rather be transported to the magical world of Hogwarts as opposed to facing the ever-increasing reality of the virus consuming the world by watching Contagion.

In the last couple of weeks, Contagion has become a hot topic and rightfully so, as the film was noted at its release for being quite realistic. It presents multiple viewpoints of a virus ravaging Earth. Namely, it focuses on scientific efforts to find a cure, a conspiracy theorist blogger trying to expose the government, and how idyllic suburbia can be radically changed in the wake of a monumental tragedy. In fact, many online have cited the film as being more of a sobering documentary that easily showcases how bad the coronavirus could get. The contagion in the titular film has a death rate of 30% whereas the coronavirus is far lower than that.

Contagion was a financial and critical success in 2011 and was considered to be one of Steven Soderbergh’s most unique projects at the time. As the years passed, Contagion faded into obscurity, remaining only a brief talking point between film aficionados and Steven Soderbergh fans. With the coronavirus now the hottest topic in the world, Warner Bros.’ Contagion has found a new life but it’s a shame it’s under these trying circumstances.

Have you seen Warner Bros.’ Contagion in the last few weeks because of the coronavirus? Let us know in the comments!
