According to insiders, Leto and Robbie will return for “a criminal love story” but don’t expect the film anytime soon as it is set to follow the Suicide Squad sequel which is currently in development. Although it seems it may be a while before a Joker and Harley Quinn film comes to fruition, the project is reportedly further along in development than the Joker origin film which was revealed to be in early development. Warner Bros. is looking to use spinoffs such as the Joker origin film as a way of standing its slate of DC films apart from the ongoing cinematic universes from Marvel and Lucasfilm.
UPDATE: Deadline previously reported that the Joker and Harley Quinn film was Gotham City Sirens — meaning David Ayer was no longer set to direct the project that was to feature Robbie’s Harley Quinn alongside Poison Ivy and Catwoman, however, the trade has now updated their story, reporting that the Joker and Harley Quinn film and Gotham City Sirens are two separate projects and that Ayer is still attached to direct the latter.
Robbie also remains attached to the project as an executive producer. Her role as executive producer comes as part of a first-look deal she struck after Suicide Squad to develop and produce three feature films at Warner Bros. through her production company, LuckyChap Entertainment.
As of now, the Joker and Harley Quinn film does not have a release date. Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for the latest news on the future of the DC Extended Universe as we learn it.
