During an interview on British morning show Sunday Brunch, Dan Aykroyd revealed that he wasn't pleased with how Paul Feig handled the Ghostbusters reboot.
Last year saw the release of the wildly controversial female-led Ghostbusters reboot, directed by Paul Feig. The film received mixed to positive reviews and made its money back at the box office, but it wasn’t considered a success by Sony and fans. Someone who also wasn’t happy with the reboot is Dan Aykroyd, producer of the film, and star of the original film.
In an interview with British morning show Sunday Brunch, Aykroyd revealed that Paul Feig wasn’t interested in certain scenes that he had pitched, and when the film didn’t test well, Feig had to go back and reshoot certain scenes, adding $40 million to the Ghostbusters budget. Aykroyd has been heavily invested in the franchise so it seems pretty tragic that he wasn’t into Feig’s direction.

“The girls are great in it. Kate McKinnon, Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig – what a wonderful, wonderful players they are – and Leslie Jones. I was really happy with the movie, but it cost too much. And Sony does not like to lose money. It made a lot of money around the world but just cost too much, making it economically not feasible to do another one. So that’s too bad – the director, he spent too much on it. He didn’t shoot scenes we suggested to him and several scenes that were going to be needed and he said “nah, we don’t need them”. Then we tested the movie and they needed them and he had to go back. About $30 to $40 million in reshoots. So he will not be back on the Sony lot any time soon.”
Despite Aykroyd’s harsh remarks regarding Ghostbusters, it’s genuinely great to see someone of his stature be blunt and honest, especially in an industry that prefers to let skeletons stay in closets. It should be noted that Aykroyd doesn’t think the movie was bad per se, he was just disappointed with the costs of reshoots. According to Screenrant, the interview was heavily edited when it was rebroadcasted, so it appears that someone wasn’t too happy with Aykroyd’s words.
