Danny Boyle Breaks Silence On His Shocking Exit From Bond 25

Trainspotting director Danny Boyle breaks his silence upon his exit from James Bond 25, now potentially called Eclipse, and calls it “a great shame”.

Director Danny Boyle was attached to Bond 25, or Eclipse if the latest rumors of the film’s title are indeed true, until August last year because of creative differences with producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson. His script was written with his longtime collaborator John Hodge and was effectively scrapped to make way for True Detective and Maniac director Cary Joji Fukunaga.

Speaking to Empire, Danny Boyle spoke about the fact that Hodge and he were working tried and true on the Bond 25 script when suddenly the creative differences between the producers and them arose. He finally called the whole thing “a great shame”:

“What John [Hodge] and I were doing, I thought, was really good. It wasn’t finished, but it could have been really good. We were working very, very well, but they didn’t want to go down that route with us. So we decided to part company, and it would be unfair to say what it was because I don’t know what Cary [Joji Fukunaga] is going to do. I got a very nice message from him and I gave him my best wishes… It is just a great shame.”

Danny Boyle and John Hodge would have perhaps added their traditional, angsty and over the top film style to Bond 25 for what could have been a remarkable milestone for 007. Nevertheless, Cary Joji Fukunaga sure knows how to tell a story and, if the film is indeed the last outing for Daniel Craig as James Bond, well the movie may very well be in good hands. After what he did in True Detective and Maniac, it’s safe to say that the next 007 film will be nothing short of fantastic. It would be awesome to see Danny Boyle attached to another Bond project in the near future, though.

Details on the project are currently unknown, though it is set to be Daniel Craig’s final outing as 007 after having played the character in Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, Skyfall, and Spectre.

Directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga, the 25th installment of the franchise is currently eyeing Bohemian Rhapsody star Rami Malek as the main villain. Production is expected to begin this April at Pinewood Studios.

James Bond 25 is scheduled to be released in theaters on 8, April 2020.
