‘Daredevil’ Star Charlie Cox Practically Blinded Himself To Play Matt Murdock

When the Daredevil TV show first hit Netflix it marked the character’s debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The series was met with critical acclaim for a number reasons, not the least of which was the performance of Charlie Cox, who assumed the role of Daredevil/Matt Murdock after Ben Affleck played the character in the lambasted feature film from 20th Century Fox. With the Blu-Ray release for the first season of Daredevil now upon us, Charlie Cox has revealed one of the methods he took to convincingly play the blind lawyer of Hell’s Kitchen.

At Wizard World Pittsburgh , Charlie Cox explained how far he went to accurately play a blind character.

“I don’t know if you know this [or not] but on the first season, I was trying to figure out how to do it. I went to this specialist, an optician – and I had these lenses made that were identical to my eyes but they completely blinded me. You put them in and I couldn’t see a thing and I thought great, I’ll do that and I don’t have to do any acting. The problem with that was that after every take, someone from the crew had to come and get me and lead me away and kind of sit me down. After the second day, I was like this is going to get really old, really quick.”

While it seems Charlie Cox did not stick with this form of method acting for long, it does show the level of his dedication to playing the role with as much authenticity as possible.

Charlie Cox will return to the role of Matt Murdock/Daredevil in Marvel’s The Defenders alongside Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones, Mike Colter as Luke Cage and Finn Jones as Danny Rand/Iron Fist.
