‘Dark Phoenix’ Director Confirms That Major Character Death In The Trailer

A new Dark Phoenix trailer was released last night and it features what could be the death of Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique. Now, Dark Phoenix director Simon Kinberg has confirmed that this indeed is the end of Mystique.

Dark Phoenix has been in development for quite some time now that had some wondering what could be next for the X-Men, but with the recent trailer it seems that now some questions may have been answered. One of the biggest moments of the trailer was showed Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique seeminly being killed by Sophie Turner’s Jean Grey. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Simon Kinberg had the following to say about about the death of Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique in the movie.

“Well, the thought process behind that was to primarily show that this is a movie that is unlike other X-Men movies. It’s a movie where shocking things happen, where intense, dramatic things happen. People don’t just fall off buildings and dust themselves off and walk away. There’s a reality to this movie and a consequence to this movie. Even more than that, it was to show that Jean/Dark Phoenix is genuinely a threat to everyone, including the X-Men.”

Kinberg then commented on killing off one of the movie’s biggest stars with Jennifer Lawrence, but he teased that the movie also features “other major casualties.”

“It was a challenge. One of the things I wanted to do with this movie is get the movie outside and make it feel like you’re on location and put it in real world environments as much as its also in otherworldly environments. But I wanted it to feel like it could take place in your neighborhood. That particular neighborhood we built from the ground up. That entire street was a build on the studio up in Montreal, and it was a massive build. All those houses and the bridge you see in the distance, all of that was built really not for the sake of secrecy, but obviously it helped with that. But more because there’s a lot of action that takes place there. Houses get blown up, and you couldn’t obviously do that in a real environment.”

Jennifer Lawrence has played the character of Mystique since 2011’s X-Men: First Class. The character has since been placed alongside the heroes throughout most of the films. This is something that did not sit well with some fans. Though the decision to make her character a hero is different than her comic book counterpart, the visuals for Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique have been great since the first film and now fans will be be able to see her one last time in Dark Phoenix.

What do you think of the new trailer for Dark Phoenix? Do you wish Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique had a different fate? Share your thoughts below!

“In DARK PHOENIX, the X-MEN face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite — not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.”

Directed by Simon Kinberg, X-Men: Dark Phoenix stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan, Sophie Turner, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters, and Jessica Chastain.

Dark Phoenix is set to hit theaters on June 7, 2019.
