Simon Kinberg Says ‘Dark Phoenix’ Is The Beginning Of New Chapter For The ‘X-Men’ Franchise

Simon Kinberg, director of the latest chapter in the X-Men movie saga Dark Phoenix said that it’s a “beginning of a new chapter for the franchise”.

Speaking to Cinepop, Kinberg explained that he wanted a different tone for Dark Phoenix, similar to what James Mangold did with Logan, and work upon what Bryan Singer started with Xavier’s Mutants:

“I see it as a new chapter. I see it as taking the franchise in a different direction tonally. And that doesn’t mean that the next one will have the same tone, it just means that the next one can have a different tone. I think for many years, the X-Men, Bryan [Singer] really transformed the superhero genre in 2000 or 2001 when the first one came out. That’s almost 20 years ago. […] But that was 20 years ago and I think, I really felt like it time to really change the look, the feel, the tone, the vibe of these movies. And that doesn’t mean this is the one going forward, it just means that if it’s me or whoever directs the next one, you can make it different, and you have to make it different.”

We’ll have to see what Kinberg’s new version of his take of The Phoenix Force adds to what he already did in X-Men: The Last Stand, which he co-wrote with Zak Penn.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix is directed by Simon Kinberg and stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan, Sophie Turner, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters, and Jessica Chastain.
