‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’ Projected To Lose More Money Than ‘Fantastic Four’

It appears that Dark Phoenix is going to bomb harder at the global box office than even Fantastic Four, and that is really saying something. After receiving terrible reviews, mixed public reception and a shockingly low box office opening of $33 million domestically, the latest and final film in the X-Men franchise is looking to end its run with a whimper.

Dark Phoenix played only in 426 theaters in the U.S. this weekend, while the film’s international run is also about to come to an abrupt end. The superhero movie is expected to earn slightly more than $250 million at the worldwide box office. Although this total might seem like a reasonable number for most movies, this is not the case for the Simon Kinberg’s directorial debut which reportedly had a $200 million budget to work with (excluding marketing costs).

According to Forbes, since the film will earn less than 1.39 times its overall budget, the film will make less money than the ultimate disaster that was the ill-fated Fantastic Four reboot, which earned $167.9 million on a reported $120 million budget back in 2015.

While the film still hasn’t left theaters, it will be impossible for 20th Century Fox to break even with this movie.
