‘The Dark Tower’ Director On What The Sequel Would Be About

The journey of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower book series from page to screen has been a long one full of stops and starts and more than it’s fair share of difficulties, but director Nikolaj Arcel has finally managed to bring a feature film version of The Dark Tower to life on the big screen. Now that it’s finally here, though, the question is, where do we go next?

Director Nikolaj Arcel revealed to Cinema Blend what his plan for the sequel would be, if the first is succesful enough to warrant one. Here is what he said:

“The best way to continue the series, if we are lucky enough to continue, would be with what is actually book two, because now the other characters start coming into the story. They start gathering the band of heroes. This is really only trying to encompass novel one, with elements from some of the other novels.”

The second book in The Dark Tower series is entitled The Drawing of the Three, which sees gunslinger Roland Deschain assembling three companions from their different periods of time in our world before they can continue on to The Dark Tower. Those companions are recovering heroin addict Eddie Dean, double amputee and Civil Rights activist Odetta Holmes, and sociopathic serial killer Jack Mort.

Arcel even confirmed to Cinema Blend that he would bring the companions in for a sequel:

“Yes. Of course. There’s no way you can continue the story without bringing them in.”

Directed by Nikolaj Arcel, the film stars Idris Elba as Roland Deschain, Matthew McConaughey as The Man in Black, Tom Taylor as Jake Chambers, Katheryn Winnick as Laurie Chambers, Abbey Lee as Tirana, Jackie Earle Haley as Sayre, Fran Kranz as Pimli, Claudia Kim as Arra Champignon and Dennis Haysbert as Steven Deschain. The Dark Tower series tells the story of Roland Deschain, Mid-World’s last gunslinger, who is traveling southeast across Mid-World’s post-apocalyptic landscape, searching for the powerful but elusive magical edifice known as The Dark Tower. Located in the fey region of End-World, amid a sea of singing red roses, the Dark Tower is the nexus point of the time-space continuum. It is the heart of all worlds, but it is also under threat. Someone, or something, is using the evil technology of the Great Old Ones to destroy it.

The Dark Tower hits theaters August 4, 2017.
