Sony has released a new image from the upcoming Stephen King adaptation The Dark Tower, featuring Idris Elba and Tom Taylor as Roland and Jake respectively.
In the new world of cinematic universes, King’s work remains a great, untapped resource, despite the glut of subpar adaptations that litter the Hollywood landscape. The Dark Tower sits at the center of the author’s storytelling literally and figuratively, unifying his many, many books into a larger meta-narrative. If all the rights were in one place a la Marvel Studios, a cohesive Stephen King cinematic universe would be just as deep as those of the Marvel and DC superheroes. For now, us King acolytes (of which many up-and-coming filmmakers in Hollywood are. Hello Stranger Things!) will have to console ourselves with King adaptations that actually live up to their source material for once.
The Dark Tower hits theaters July 28, 2017.
