Darth Vader is one of the most iconic villains in fiction, easily. The Star Wars franchise has won over generations of new fans since the first film premiered in 1977. In The Phantom Menace, fans are introduced to a younger version of Darth Vader, Anakin Skywalker (Jake Lloyd). It’s in this film that fans learn about the odd circumstances surrounding the birth of Anakin.
Mimicking the birth of Jesus Christ, Anakin’s mother did not become pregnant by the usual means and instead the baby was conjured within her by another force. Written by Charles Soule, with art by Giuseppe Camuncoli, issue #25 of Darth Vader brings the villain’s latest arc to a close. During this issue, Vader goes on a vision quest upon arriving on Mustafar, the planet where Anakin was physically scarred and left for dead by Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) in Revenge of the Sith and also the home of Fortress Vader.
During his vision, Darth Vader revisits events from his past but with a much darker twist than before. The vision features moments that seem to explain who Vader’s father truly was but it never quite lands on a concrete answer. In one moment, the iconic line from The Empire Strikes Back, “I am your father”, appears before he sees both Obi-Wan Kenobi and Sheev Palpatine. Later, there’s even a moment in which we see Palpatine conjuring dark energy within Anakin’s pregnant mother. Fans can take a look at this image and many more to help form their own theories on the subject.
The answer regarding the father of Star Wars‘ most iconic villain remains inconclusive but this final issue of the Fortress Vader arc offers fans plenty to think about to provide their own interpretations.
