Dave Bautista Reveals James Gunn Had An Idea For A Drax & Mantis Film

Dave Bautista revealed that Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn had an idea for a film centered on Drax and Mantis.

Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol .2 introduced audiences and Dave Bautista’s Drax to Mantis, an empath portrayed by actress Pom Klementieff. The comedic dynamic between Dave Bautista’s Drax and Mantis provided some of the most memorable moments in Vol 2. and it appears James Gunn wanted to explore that relationship further in a standalone film centered on the duo.

During an interview with Collider Video, Dave Bautista was asked if he would be interested in playing Drax for a Disney Plus. While Dave Bautista admitted that he wouldn’t want to do a Drax series because of the hours required to put on the makeup, he would be willing to star in a solo film and that James Gunn even had an idea for such a project that also involved Mantis:

“James Gunn had the idea to do a Drax-Mantis movie. That’s what I’d be up for because there’s just too much fun there. Well, he wanted to do it, he had an idea for it. It’s just Marvel has their slot for the next fix years and they know how their story is going to go. It’s hard for them to have an idea for a film and say ‘yeah we want to fit that into here’. It just didn’t fit into their schedule.”

Drax and Mantis are expected to return in the third Guardians of the Galaxy film. While production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was scheduled to begin early this year, the project was put on hold following Disney’s decision to remove Gunn as the director of the final chapter in the trilogy. Now, James Gunn will begin production on the third Guardians of the Galaxy film after completing work on The Suicide Squad for Warner Bros. and DC. Details on the third chapter of James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy are currently unknown, though the film will likely explore the ramifications of the universe-changing events in Avengers: Endgame.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is expected to star Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, and Sean Gunn.
