Dave Bautista Wants A Drax The Destroyer Solo Film In The MCU

Guardians of the Galaxy actor Dave Bautista has expressed interest in doing a standalone project starring Drax the Destroyer in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with or without James Gunn involved on the hypothetical spin-off.

Two days ago, Dave Bautista noted that he was interested in the idea of a Drax-focused spin-off, but noted that Marvel is not interested in it for the time being:

Nonetheless, Dave Bautista hasn’t given up hope, elaborating on why he thinks that the character, especially as reimagined by his dear friend James Gunn, has the potential for a spin-off down the road:

He also noted that, in spite of his comment about stepping out of the role if that’s what it took to get the movie made, he’s completely willing to keep working with Marvel Studios and doesn’t see himself leaving anytime soon:

As it stands, it seems like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 could take Drax in an interesting direction after largely being a source of comic relief since the release of the original movie. With both Ronan and Thanos dead, his quest for vengeance is over, but where does he go from there? Fans have speculated that a retcon could be in order, revealing that his daughter, who becomes the superhero Moondragon in the comics, is still alive – and it seems like a “Drax and Moondragon” spin-off could be a better starting point for a story than a standalone movie with Dave Bautista’s crazed, literal-minded assassin.

Production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was originally expected to begin this past January. James Gunn was set to direct from a script he wrote but the film was ultimately delayed after Disney removed James Gunn from the project before reversing their decision and bringing him back in March. But to complicate matters even further, James Gunn jumped ship after being let go by Disney over to DC Films to both write and direct the long-in-development Suicide Squad sequel, bringing a whole new take on the supervillain team-up. He’ll now do both films with The Suicide Squad set to go before the lens prior to filming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is expected to star Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, and Sean Gunn. The cast of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies was most recently seen in Avengers: Endgame.
