Speaking with Tamba Bay Times, Dave Bautista called out The Rock and criticized him for not being a “great actor” while making it explicitly clear he doesn’t want to be compared to the former People’s Champion because he “hates” it:
“Do not compare me to The Rock or John Cena. Everyone does it. Those guys are wrestlers who became movie stars. I’m … something else. I was a wrestler. Now, I’m an actor.
Bautista went on to credit The Rock whose incredible charisma paved the way for his superstardom to reach unprecedented levels of success while at the same time, calling him out for not being a “great” actor:
“Rock was, in a way, a movie star before he was even a movie star. There is something about him that’s really special. I’d never take that away from him. Would I consider him a great actor? F— no.”
The Marvel actor continued, explaining that roles in big budget blockbusters aren’t the kinds of roles he wants as he is proud to be a character actor and would much prefer to work with Oscar winners:
“I want good roles. I don’t care about Fast and Furious or Bumblebee. … That’s not the kind of stardom I want. … I want to be in Dune. I want to work with Denis Villeneuve. I want to work with Sam Mendes and Jodie Foster. I want to work with Academy Award winners. I’m proud to be a character actor. I want that respect and credibility and education.”
Although Dave Bautista may be looking to take his career in another direction with roles more akin to his in Blade Runner 2049, he’s expected to appear next in Avengers: Endgame and also contracted to appear in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3.
