Suicide Squad director David Ayer confirms that Gotham City Sirens is still being developed, although he won't say much more than that.
While promoting his new movie Bright, David Ayer was asked by Collider about the development of the DC Comics adaptation, which has Suicide Squad‘s breakout character Harley Quinn cross paths with fellow criminals Catwoman and Poison Ivy. Ayer’s reply on the status of Gotham City Sirens was limited to three short words:
“It’s in development.”
In addition, when asked about whether or not there are still a bunch of deleted scenes from Suicide Squad that have yet to be revealed, David Ayer preferred to keep that answer a mystery:
“I don’t want to answer that, because it’s better to leave the mystery. Sometimes, the mystery might be more exciting than the answer.”
From the sound of things, the movie is not an immediate priority for the studio as of yet — it seems likely that Suicide Squad 2 (targeting a 2019 or early 2020 release window) will be the next supervillain-based movie that Warner Brothers releases, possibly followed by the planned Joker & Harley Quinn movie which might better lead into Gotham City Sirens. DC’s film division still has growing pains it needs to sort through before this project advances significantly, and it’s more important that the movie gets the development it needs before being scheduled.
Gotham City Sirens does not have a set release date. Margot Robbie and Jared Leto are expected to reprise their roles as Harley Quinn and the Joker.
