David Ayer Thinks ‘Suicide Squad’ Will Break New Ground In Superhero Genre

Say what you want about Warner Bros.’ handling of their DC Comics properties, at least they are swinging for the fences to try and catch up to Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe. How else could you explain getting the go-ahead on Suicide Squad, a film that features mostly bad guys and is shaping up to be one of WB’s weirdest (in a good way) comic book films ever? Unlike your average cookie-cutter superhero blockbuster, Suicide Squad will give movie-goers something they’ve never really seen before. That uniqueness comes straight from director David Ayer, according to executive producer Charles Roven.

“We’d just started shooting Batman v Superman, when we were figuring out our path through the expanding DC Justice League universe. Then David Ayer came and pitches his take on Suicide Squad. It had this darkness and edge, while still tonally in the zone of what we’re trying to do with these movies. And it’s impossible that you could get a big tentpole picture from pitch to start of principal photography and faster than we did.”

David Ayer himself is not afraid to embrace the more unusual aspects of Suicide Squad and actually boasts about them. The director believes it is these differences, these quirks, that will pave the way for a new type of superhero movie.

“You know, all these movies are about defeating the evil alien robot from f—-ing Planet X, before it destroys the world with its ticking clock. And who the f—- cares? But you do this story about struggle and isolation and people who have been s—- on that suddenly get thrown this lifeline…that’s not so bad…I like to think of this as the Comic Book Movie 2.0”

Despite the many successes on the resume, the MCU has been criticized for going back to the End-Of-The-World well one too many times. That is one reason why fans responded so positively to Ant-Man‘s more self-contained story. Perhaps the same will apply to Suicide Squad. Fans may enjoy the darker tone and the lack of well-established capes running around. Plus, Jared Leto is going to absolutely kill it as The Joker.

Suicide Squad is set to hit theaters on Aug. 5, 2016.
