David Dastmalchian Confirms Role As The Polka-Dot Man In James Gunn’s ‘The Suicide Squad’

Ant-Man actor David Dastmalchian has confirmed his role as The Polka-Dot Man in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, David Dastmalchian confirmed that he is indeed boarding the upcoming soft reboot of Suicide Squad from James Gunn, and whether or not he was familiar with The Polka-Dot Man before signing on:

“To be completely honest, I was not. That was a very exciting morning this morning to know that that is really happening. That he has gone up against the Caped Crusader, I know that, and I know that he has a really rad name.”

David Dastmalchian went on to share his excitement to work with director James Gunn:

“That man understands so much about what makes these modern myths so effective and powerful.”

The trade reported the Ant-Man actor had joined The Suicide Squad earlier this week as Polka-Dot Man, a minor Batman villain who began as a low-level crook before committing crimes with polka dot themes in an attempt to make a name for himself. The villain’s spotted costume also features concealed weapons and James Gunn’s take on the character will reportedly lean into the embarrassment of his “lame” abilities.

David Dastmalchian is set to star in the film with Idris Elba and Daniela Melchior, who boarded the James Gunn project as Ratcatcher this week as well. In the comics, Ratcatcher was a Gotham City exterminator before developing the ability to communicate with sewer rats and use them as an army of rodents.

2016’s Suicide Squad from director David Ayer followed a team of supervillains recruited by the government to go on a dangerous black ops mission in exchange for reduced sentences. The cast included Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Jared Leto as The Joker. This doesn’t appear to be the case for James Gunn’s film, however.

Plot details for James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad remain under wraps. A previous draft of the script was once rumored to center on the supervillain team’s mission to find a terrifying new Weapon of Mass Destruction that happened to be Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam.

Warrior director Gavin O’Connor was previously set to write and direct Suicide Squad 2 with Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, and Will Smith having been confirmed to return for the sequel. James Gunn, however, will have a whole new take on the team-up flick, with a new squad that will only bring back certain members of the original cast such as Jai Courtney’s Captain Boomerang and Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. Joel Kinnaman is reportedly out as far as returning as Rick Flagg.

James Gunn will reportedly shoot The Suicide Squad before he moves back to Marvel Studios in order to complete the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy with the third installment.
