David Fincher Throws Shade At Marvel Studios & Hollywood

While promoting his new Netflix series Mindhunter, David Fincher had a lot to say about the industry, and more specifically Marvel Studios.

While promoting his new Netflix series Mindhunter, David Fincher had a lot to say about the industry, and more specifically Marvel Studios.

It’s a common criticism for fans to say that all Marvel films are more of the same, formulaic and aren’t very complex, but when a prestigious director comes out and says it we all should take notice. David Fincher believes that Netflix has unleashed a new way of storytelling that Hollywood doesn’t  really allow and he points a finger at Marvel Studios as the main culprit. Here’s exactly what Fincher had to say about them:

“Look, there’s a very large talent pool of people who are- don’t feel there’s much for them in terms of sustenance working for Marvel, And I think that if we can make a playground for them that is thoughtful, adult, interesting, complex, challenging stories and figure out ways to pull them into it, there’s a chance at something that isn’t lassoed and hogtied by three acts. And there’s something else that doesn’t have to be 22-minute half hour or have a cliffhanger. I think it is an exciting time.”

While I agree that all Marvel Studios films are lacking a particular voice and difference in storytelling structure, I also have to agree that whatever they’re doing is working and most Marvel Studios fans love it. With films like Thor: Ragnarok and Guardians of the Galaxy, Marvel appears to be moving in to a very director friendly environment and you can tell from the DNA of those film that they’re the spawn of Taika Waititi and James Gunn.

What do you guys think of David Fincher’s comments? Do you agree with him? Sound off in the comments below.

David Fincher’s Mindhunter is currently on Netflix and the next Marvel Studios film, Thor: Ragnarok hits theaters November 3rd, 2017!
