David Goyer On His Failed ‘Green Arrow’ Film

David Goyer is definitely no stranger to comic book films. He’s worked on many projects in the past including directing Blade:Trinity, writting the screenplay for Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy and most recently, Man Of Steel. Back in the late 2000’s, Goyer had written a screenplay for a film titled Green Arrow: Escape From Super Max which saw the Emerald Archer locked away for life for a crime he didn’t commit. The script also had cameos from multiple famous villains including The Joker, The Riddler, and more. Many have linked the fact of David Goyer’s script having so many villains to the Suicide Squad, a film the Warner Bros and DC have a lot of faith in which will be coming out August 5th, 2016.

“By the way, everything I see about Suicide Squad looks fantastic and it’s a different story. But it (Green Arrow: Escape From Super Max) was absolutely ahead of its time. You know, Marvel was considering doing the Sinister Six and at the time, God, I think this was eight or nine years ago that we wrote a couple of dreafts, but it certainly was like this oddball project at Warner Bros at the time, they were like – even though the script was good – ‘why would we make a movie about a bunch of villains? That makes no sense.’ The exectutive on it was really visionary but the higher-ups, none of whom are at Warner Bros any more just thought at the time, you know, we just want to make Batman and Superman movies. We don’t want to make any other characters. But this was before Marvel had really taken of, before more obscure projects like Guardians of the Galaxy or Ant-man or things like that had huge success, before the current gold rush I guess, if you will. It’s natural that eventually someones was going to make a villain movie, so that’s just what happened!”

It’s very unlikely that David Goyer will try and revive this project in the future or attempt to direct any of the upcoming films on Warner’s DC movies slate, as he has stated that he wont be directing any of them. Green Arrow is definitely a character that fans love and have been wanting to see on the silver screen. As of right now, no plans (that we know of) to bring Green Arrow into the DCEU  have been made but it’s possible that down the road we will see the Emerald Archer pop up.
