Stranger Things and Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen star David Harbour was told he was too fat to play The Blob in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
In a recent interview with The Wrap, David Harbour revealed that he once auditioned for a role in Hugh Jackman’s first Wolverine spin-off, X-Men Origins: Wolverine. It did not go so well for the actor, as during the audition, he lifted his shirt and squeezed his belly, saying, “I got your Blob right here!”
“I just made a stupid joke and then they called me and the director, we met at like a hotel, and he was like, ‘David, look, you’re wonderful, we really think you’re just a great actor, we’re just concerned… we’re really concerned.’ I was like, ‘Why, what’s your concern? I’m good to go. I’m available, let’s do this!’ And they were like, ‘no, it’s just, you lifted up your shirt and we saw the… we’re just a little worried about your health.’ … I was like, ‘Wait a minute, dude … ‘You are telling me I’m too fat to play The Blob? That’s awesome, I have to get the f— back to New York.’ That’s my audition — so I didn’t get The Blob.”
The role of The Blob eventually went to the decidedly fit Kevin Durand in the Wolverine film, as he was in shape in the earlier parts of the film before wearing a fat suit to play the much heavier version of the character years later. Perhaps things worked out for the best for David Harbour, as X-Men Origins: Wolverine is pretty much one of the worst comic book films ever made, with only Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and Ryan Reynold’s Deadpool (thankfully) somehow miraculously continuing on in the series.
Stranger Things Season 2 hits Netflix on October 31st. Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen is planned for a 2018 release.
