As we already know from the character details that were officially released, Sean Astin (The Goonies) will play Bob Newby, a kind-hearted former nerd who went to high school with Joyce (Winona Ryder) and Hopper (Harbour) who now manages the local Hawkins RadioShack. While many hoped to see Joyce and Hopper develop a romantic relationship, Harbour revealed that Bob Newby is actually Joyce’s new boyfriend come season two:
“We have Sean Astin… he’s Winona’s new boyfriend — much to the chagrin to the Chief of Police.”
Executive producer and director Shawn Levy has teased the second season of Stranger Things as a struggle to reclaim normalcy as the characters face the consequences of Will’s time spent in the Upside Down and the series deals with the inter-dimensional portal that is still open at the Department of Energy. Harbour went a little further to elaborate on how the townspeople of Hawkins will have reacted to the events of season one when we pick up with the characters a year later:
“It’s a year later in the story, so there are several things that happened last year — like Will has come back — there are certain people in the town that know what happened, and then certain people that don’t know what happened. So there’s a lot of fall out with who knows what.”
One important thing to note here is that towards the end of the final episode of season one, a newspaper clipping is seen on the wall in Hawkins Police Station which reveals Joyce did not keep her end of the bargain with Dr. Brenner and revealed to the media the entire secret experiment gone wrong at Hawkins National Lab so the people of Hawkins are definitely aware of what went on. Whether or not they choose to believe it is another story. The clipping also states that Dr. Brenner declined to comment on the allegations which is a clue in and of itself that Brenner may still be alive.
Lastly, Harbour revealed that the series will include some Justice for Barb right off the bat in season two:
“The question and the feelings that Nancy has that no one ever cares about her friend Barb, are very much present in the beginning of the season.”
While I’m not a fan of productions responding creatively to fan reactions, the uproar regarding the lack of acknowledgment surrounding Barb’s death was so strong it cannot be ignored.
Stranger Things stars Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Joe Keery, and Noah Schnapp. The adventure continues in the fall of 1984. The second season hits Netflix sometime in 2017.
