Our Executive Editor Nathaniel Brail had a chat with Shazam! director David F. Sandberg and while speaking about Mark Strong and his reprisal as DC villain Dr. Thaddeus Sivana, they reminisced about the deeply flawed Ryan Reynolds’ Green Lantern. If can you remember, Strong played the part of Green Lantern Corp-gone-bad Sinestro in that film. Although his depiction was one of the least criticized points in Green Lantern, the movie was a shameful disappointment for fans and critics alike. After talking about the evident abilities that Mark Strong has as an actor, our Executive Editor asked Sanberg if there was any reference to the failed film and he answered with a sweet and simple No:
Reporter: Can you tell us a little bit about Mark Strong as a villain? He’s one of the few parts of the Green Lantern movie that people don’t usually criticize.
Sandberg: Yeah.
Reporter: So, and he talked about how this was kind of a second chance at playing the villain but…
Sandberg: Yeah, and he really enjoys playing a villain as well. He really has fun with being a bad guy, which is great, because it’s just so fun to watch with someone who enjoys being evil. Yeah, we’re very lucky to get him, because he’s such a great actor.
Reporter: Is there any sort of fun Easter egg to his character from Green Lantern in this movie?
Sandberg: No, there isn’t.
It’s clear that neither Sandberg, DC, Warner Bros or even the fans want to remember that film. Although it would have been something to laugh at, as we did in both Deadpool movies when Wade Wilson used Hal Jordan to pull some smiles off of our faces, we think that DC fans are more excited about new Green Lantern content and if we will ever see the Corps. in the silver screen.
In the meantime, we’ll have Shazam! coming up and here’s its synopsis:
We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).
Directed by David F. Sandberg, Shazam! stars Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Mark Strong, Jack Dylan Grazer, Grace Fulton, Faithe Herman, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Cooper Andrews, Marta Milans, and Ron Cephas.
