In spite of campaigning for the role of Cable in the Deadpool sequel, Stephen Lang never got the chance to audition for the part.
Lang spoke with Screen Rant to promote his new movie Braven, and when asked about the role he didn’t get, he revealed that he was never asked by Fox for a part in the film. Lang was surprisingly candid, stating that he had stopped reading Marvel Comics long before Cable was first introduced:
“I never auditioned for [Deadpool 2] and you know, truth be told, I’m fairly Cable-ignorant. Look, my relationship with Marvel Comics goes back to the ’60s when – and I’m talking about as a reader, I was right there for the first Spider-Man, I was a Fantastic Four fan, I loved Doctor Strange, I love Jim Steranko, Jack ‘The King’ Kirby, all them, Steve Ditko, you know, I knew who they were and I was reading all that stuff, I will say that it – by the time Cable came around, I had kind of moved on.”
As it stands, Lang is already busy at Fox working on the Avatar sequels; he’s set to appear in every single one of them. While a role as the character could have worked out if the sequels continued to languish in Development Hell, the projects finally entering development after years of James Cameron hyping them up would greatly complicate Lang’s schedule. But still, one can only wonder what could have been…
