On last night’s episode of Real Time with Bill Maher during his “New Rule” segment, Maher again gave his opinion on comic book fans, Stan Lee, and director Kevin Smith. While Maher is clearly not a fan of adults who still enjoy comic books, there are no doubt many in both the industry and in fandom who do. Rob Liefeld, co-creator of Deadpool, is one of those people. Earlier this morning, Rob Liefeld took to his Twitter to give his opinion on Maher’s words.
While many, including Maher, may see comic books as fictional, colorful characters in unrealistic situations, Rob Liefeld drew some attention to more mature and well-regarded comics such as Watchmen, Swamp Thing, The Dark Knight Returns, Frank Miller’s Daredevil, as well as anything by either Alan Moore or Frank Miller. Here, have a look at Rob Liefeld’s response to Bill Maher in the tweet below:
In addition to this, it’s worth noting that Liefeld said he appreciates Bill Maher’s point of view without attacking or directly addressing it. Rather, he suggested stories that gear more towards adult audiences rather than what you’d expect from something like a Spider-Man or Teen Titans story, and even those respective franchises can and do have mature stories.
Still, though, what did you think of Bill Maher’s comments? Given that this is, well, Bill Maher, it’s pretty consistent with how he would address most things on his program. But given that this deals with comic fans specifically, what do you make of it? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
Real Time with Bill Maher airs on Friday nights at 10 pm on HBO.
