Expect Blood & Guts From Netflix ‘Death Note’ Adaptation

Directed by Adam Wingard, Death Note is getting a Hollywood treatment. Due to the series immense popularity with anime fans, Netflix jumped at the opportunity to adapt this material. Now, Wingard is no stranger to the horror genre, with previous hits like You’re Next,  The Guest,  and his current film Blair Witch 2016, it made sense when Netflix tasked him with adapting the Japanese anime hit, Death Note for American audiences.

In an interview with Collider, Wingard gave fans a taste of what to expect from his upcoming adaptation.

We can do whatever we want. That was the cool thing about it because it’s an anime film. So, technically, it’s a cartoon that you bring to life. To me, the thing about anime is that it’s so adult-oriented. I remember going to Suncoast growing up and you see Akira there with the little “Not for Kids” sticker on it. That always made an impact on me. So, doing my first live-action anime thing, to me it was important that you have those adult themes. So, it’s got nudity, it’s got swearing, it’s got a ton of violence. Jason Eisener, who did Hobo with a Shotgun. I brought him on – I’m good friends with him – as second-unit director. There’s basically like three good Jason Eisner short films in there and they’re all very gory. I was able to just turn him loose some time, and just do some crazy stuff.

Seeing as though the Death Note anime isn’t particularly gory, or has a lot of swearing, Wingard’s personal take on the material is half exciting and half nerve-wracking. With any adaptation, there is always worry that Hollywood will do too much or not enough with the source material. Only time will tell if American Death Note will be worthy of fan admiration.

Death Note is scheduled to be released in 2017 but has no official release date. However, Blair Witch 2016 is theaters starting today! Be sure to check back with Heroic Hollywood this weekend for our review of the film.
