New ‘Death Note’ Poster Teases Willem Dafoe’s Ryuk

The latest poster for Netflix's Death Note movie shows a clearer - but still shadowy - look at Willem Dafoe's character, the Shinigami Ryuk.

Director Adam Wingard’s adaptation of Death Note got a lot of buzz going for it when it was announced that a high-profile actor like Willem Dafoe would be portraying supporting protagonist Ryuk, one of the Shinigami (Death Gods) who appears once the title weapon has arrived in the land of the living. Wingard just released a poster giving fans a closer – though still unclear – look at what Ryuk looks like

Wingard recently had a conversation on Twitter with @Ryuk, a “character blog” on Twitter made to promote the new movie. At the end of the discussion, Wingard told Ryuk that he was going to show fans what he was working on with this poster:

While this doesn’t give us a clear look at Ryuk’s face, it does show that the aesthetic to the character’s design from the manga is left intact. Fans should also take notice that Ryuk is holding an apple, his favorite food. It’s entirely possible that we’ll be seeing new footage of the movie at the San Diego Comic Con, but for now, we’ll have to keep waiting.

Death Note will leave its mark on August 25, 2017 exclusively through the Netflix streaming service. Its cast includes Nat Wolff as Light Turner, Margaret Qualley as Mia Sutton, Keith Stanfield as L, Paul Nakauchi as Watari, Shea Whigham as James Turner, and Willem Dafoe as the voice of Ryuk. Masi Oka will also appear in an unspecified role.
