‘Detective Pikachu’ Cards Reveal Best Look At Live Action Pokemon Yet

New Detective Pikachu trading cards give us a better look at the live-action Pokemon that inhabit the fictional world of Ryme City.

About a year ago the idea of a talking Pikachu movie was the butt end of a bad joke. Even with Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds attached to voice the iconic pocket monster, fans were still a bit skeptical.

Now, two trailers, a few television spots and some nostalgic looking trading cards later, Detective Pikachu is looking to be the surprise hit of the year!

The Pokemon Company has recently released images of some reportedly rare Pokemon cards that will be released later in the year. Some of the Pokemon we have seen already in the variety of trailers and television spots and then there are others we have yet to see.

Here’s the synopsis for the upcoming Detective Pikachu:

The story begins when ace private eye Harry Goodman goes mysteriously missing, prompting his 21-year-old son Tim to find out what happened. Aiding in the investigation is Harry’s former Pokémon partner, Detective Pikachu: a hilariously wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth who is a puzzlement even to himself. Finding that they are uniquely equipped to communicate with one another, Tim and Pikachu join forces on a thrilling adventure to unravel the tangled mystery. Chasing clues together through the neon-lit streets of Ryme City—a sprawling, modern metropolis where humans and Pokémon live side by side in a hyper-realistic live-action world—they encounter a diverse cast of Pokémon characters and uncover a shocking plot that could destroy this peaceful co-existence and threaten the whole Pokémon universe.

Directed by Rob Letterman from a script co-written with Nicole Perlman, Pokémon: Detective Pikachu stars Ryan Reynolds as the titular pocket monster, Justice Smith as Tim, Kathryn Newton as Lucy, and Oscar nominee Ken Watanabe as Lt. Yoshida.

Pokémon: Detective Pikachu will be released in theaters on May 10, 2019.
