We Got This Covered reports Warner Bros. is already developing a Detective Pikachu spin-off centered on one of the most powerful Pokémon.
The outlet’s sources confirm Warner Bros. is developing a spin-off centered on Mewtwo, the powerful Pokémon who will reportedly be the secret villain of Detective Pikachu. Details on the project, including who will direct or pen the script and which cast members will return, if any, are currently unknown.
In Pokémon lore, Mewtwo is the product of a scientific experiment conducted to re-create the first known legendary Pokémon, Mew. However, after learning that he was created as a failed attempt at replacing Mew, Mewtwo became brutal in nature, a stark contrast to the powerful but sweet-natured Mew.

The story begins when ace private eye Harry Goodman goes mysteriously missing, prompting his 21-year-old son Tim to find out what happened. Aiding in the investigation is Harry’s former Pokémon partner, Detective Pikachu: a hilariously wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth who is a puzzlement even to himself. Finding that they are uniquely equipped to communicate with one another, Tim and Pikachu join forces on a thrilling adventure to unravel the tangled mystery. Chasing clues together through the neon-lit streets of Ryme City—a sprawling, modern metropolis where humans and Pokémon live side by side in a hyper-realistic live-action world—they encounter a diverse cast of Pokémon characters and uncover a shocking plot that could destroy this peaceful co-existence and threaten the whole Pokémon universe.
Directed by Rob Letterman from a script co-written with Nicole Perlman, Pokémon: Detective Pikachu stars Ryan Reynolds as the titular pocket monster, Justice Smith as Tim, Kathryn Newton as Lucy, and Oscar nominee Ken Watanabe as Lt. Yoshida.
Pokémon: Detective Pikachu will be released in theaters on May 10, 2019.
