Next year, the first live-action Pokemon film hits the big screen in the form of Detecive Pikachu. The live-action/CGI hybrid film features Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds in the titular role, providing his iconic voice to the digital rendering of the character. Now it seems that the film is utilizing a process that has been most famously performed by actor Andy Serkis in franchises such as The Lord of the Rings and Planet of the Apes.
It turns out that the Deadpool star will also provide a motion capture performance to help bring Detective Pikachu to the big screen. Ryan Reynolds recently posted an image of himself on Instagram donning the dots used to help utilize an actor’s physical performance for an animated character. Detective Pikachu isn’t the first time Ryan Reynolds has provided his voice for an animated character. In 2013, Reynolds made his animation debut with two films. The actor voiced the character Guy in The Croods and the titular snail in the film Turbo. Reynolds will also be providing his voice for Guy in the upcoming sequel The Croods 2. Unlike Detective Pikachu, those films did not require the actor to give a motion capture performance.
