A Detective Pikachu sequel is in the works at Legendary.

Detective Pikachu shocked the world with its hilarious first trailer and it showed that we have no idea what to expect with this live-action Pokemon movie. The trailer unveiled a different side to the Pokemon universe and it showed us what we could look forward to on film going forward. Although the film is months away from hitting theaters, a sequel is already in development and it even has a writer.

According to THR a Detective Pikachu sequel is already in the works at Legendary. Legendary has tapped Oren Uziel(22 Jump Street, Sonic the Hedgehog) to write the script. The studio is very confident in what they have with the first, so they’re trying to press ahead as quickly as possible. Nothing is known about the film or its sequel other than what we’ve seen in the trailers, but it looks like we may have a serious franchise on our hands.

The story begins when ace private eye Harry Goodman goes mysteriously missing, prompting his 21-year-old son Tim to find out what happened. Aiding in the investigation is Harry’s former Pokémon partner, Detective Pikachu: a hilariously wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth who is a puzzlement even to himself. Finding that they are uniquely equipped to communicate with one another, Tim and Pikachu join forces on a thrilling adventure to unravel the tangled mystery. Chasing clues together through the neon-lit streets of Ryme City—a sprawling, modern metropolis where humans and Pokémon live side by side in a hyper-realistic live-action world—they encounter a diverse cast of Pokémon characters and uncover a shocking plot that could destroy this peaceful co-existence and threaten the whole Pokémon universe.

Directed by Rob Letterman from a script co-written with Nicole Perlman, Pokémon: Detective Pikachustars Ryan Reynolds as the titular pocket monster, Justice Smith as Tim, Kathryn Newton as Lucy, and Oscar nominee Ken Watanabe as Lt. Yoshida.

Pokémon: Detective Pikachu will be released in theaters on May 10, 2019.
