One of my favorite characters from the film was Captain Cassian Andor, who is portrayed by actor Diego Luna. Seeing a Mexican actor in a lead role in a major film – let alone a Star Wars film was a sight to see, but it was also amazing that Luna was able to use his accent without having to disguise himself with an American accent.
Luna recently shared a touching story from a fan who goes by the screen name, riveralwaysknew. This particular story follows the user takng his Mexican father to see Rogue One, and once again put a spotlight on the importance of having diversity in film – particularly big budget blockbusters:
I couldn’t agree more. My heart soared seeing Chirrut Imwe (Donnie Yen) and Baze Malbus (Jiang Wen) together on screen, and kicking all sorts of ass. If I were still a child, and I went to the theater to see Rogue One, I would’ve been able to find characters that look like me within this iconic galaxy far, far away. It is stories like this that remind us that more representation featuring faces that truly reflect this world will only help.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is now in theaters. Meanwhile, Star Wars: Episode VIII will open in theaters on December 15.
