The new series will serve as a prequel for the franchise’s first-ever spinoff, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, streaming exclusively on the new Disney+ streaming service. It will follow the Rebel spy working as an intelligence operative during the formative years of the Rebel Alliance before the events of Rogue One. The new prequel series will be the second live-action Star Wars series in the franchise’s history and join Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian on Disney’s direct to consumer service.
Luna had been vocal about his hopes to return to the franchise during the press tour for the spin-off back in 2016. The actor released an official statement expressing his excitement to reprise the role of Cassian Andor:
“Going back to the Star Wars universe is very special for me. I have so many memories of the great work we did together and the relationships I made throughout the journey. We have a fantastic adventure ahead of us, and this new exciting format will give us the chance to explore this character more deeply.”
While Disney’s streaming service is expected to launch by the end of 2019, production on the Cassian Andor series will not begin until sometime next year making it the series’ debut in the platform before 2020 unlikely.
The Mandalorian, however, is expected to debut with the launch of the service. The new series set after the events of Return of the Jedi has been written by Favreau, who also serves as executive producer along with, Colin Wilson, Star Wars Rebels creator Dave Filoni, and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. Karen Gilchrist will co-executive produce. The series will be directed by Filoni, Deborah Chow (Jessica Jones), Rick Famuyiwa (Dope), Bryce Dallas Howard (Solemates), and Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok).
