Director James Wan Discusses His Approach On ‘Aquaman’

Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice hit theaters and took the world by storm. It was critically panned, divided fans and audiences, but regardless of how you felt about the film , Aquaman’s quick cameo was sure to stand out. Seen only briefly, the character made his presence known, and instantly audiences knew that this was not the silly Super Friends character from the DC’s animated past. While promoting his new film, The Conjuring 2, Director James Wan spoke with MTV on his approach to the longtime mocked DC Character Aquaman for his upcoming film with the titular character.

“A big part of it was me telling them what potential I saw in this character, as we all know, Aquaman is somewhat the butt of the joke in the superhero world. There’s something cool about that. I love the idea of being the underdog, coming in with a take on this underdog character and completely blow people’s expectations away. Like, ’Oh, you thought he was going to be a wimpy character? No no no.’ It’s going to be so cool.”

Contrary to what audiences are expecting, this film is not technically an origin story.

“There’s Justice League that happens before it, so I have to be respectful to that, but in a lot of ways… it’s a continuation but there are origin elements as well — and that’s the story that I’m excited to tell.”

Despite its early criticism, fans universally seem to agree that DC’s approach to their Cinematic universe regarding making each hero already pre-established has been accepted with open arms. Instead of fans painstakingly watching origin film after origin film, each DC film is throwing viewers into the mix of the life of a character that is already a hero, but at the same time they quickly touch base on what makes these heroes who they are.

‘Aquaman’ hits theaters on July 27th, 2018.
